Mango Madness Skin Care Expands Paraben Free Line
Anti-aging skin care product retailer Mango Madness Skin Care offers additional paraben-free skin care products including a full spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock and a new amber-based facial scrub.
Parabens are inexpensive preservatives that have been linked to breast cancer in women by several studies. These potentially harmful preservatives are used in many skin care products and have been shown to mimic the effects of estrogen by promoting the proliferation of malignant cells responsible for breast tumors. In addition, scientists at Kyoto University have demonstrated that certain parabens actually contribute to aging of the skin in the presence of sunlight. As a result, many women are now reading product labels very carefully to look for any ingredients that contain the “paraben” suffix.
Paraben compounds are synthetic chemicals combined with alcohol and may have prefixes including methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- or butyl-. Because these compounds are present in numerous consumer goods, the cumulative risk of exposure may be substantial.
In a study published in the medical journal Toxicology in 2006, scientists at Kyoto University in Japan found that methylparaben contributes to skin aging in the presence of ultraviolet light. The researchers wrote that their results indicate methylparaben in particular may have harmful effects on human skin when exposed to sunlight. Therefore, anti-aging skin care products containing methylparaben may accelerate rather than minimize skin aging.
