Winter Skin: Keep it Glowing and Radiant
Anyone who lives in winter climate knows that the delicate skin of your face is particularly sensitive to fluctuations in the temperature. And when the mercury drops, even oily skin can become dry, flaky, and red or suffer from breakouts that may not occur at other times of year. Chapped skin is caused by a combination of factors including cold winds and a drop in humidity that can feel like all the moisture has been sucked out of the air. And the worst part is, using the products that normally work for you can leave your skin in even worse condition. So what can you do to deal with dull, winter skin? Don’t head straight for the cold cream just yet (unless you want it for elbows and heels). It won’t do oily-skinned people any favors even if they are going through a dry patch. Instead, start with a trip to the dermatologist.
A lot of people have to deal with changes in skin tone due to changing seasons. For this reason, your doctor can set you up with a skin-care routine that works best for you. A dermatologist will take into account not only your skin type, but also the effect that the current weather conditions are having on it, creating a solution that is particular to you. Don’t think that some expensive product that worked miracles on your friend is automatically going to do the same for you. We all have a unique body makeup. Your money will be better spent on an office visit that will provide you with a comprehensive diagnosis and a tailor-made treatment plan.
But if you don’t have the dough on hand for the diagnosis or the expensive treatment (as many of us don’t during the holiday season), there is still a way to treat your problem skin and have it looking naturally beautiful before the family photos are snapped. You’ll just need to do a little research. It helps if you know what your skin type is at the beginning. Whether you’re starting with oily, dry, or combination skin, it’s important to have a springboard. From there, you should determine the effects the weather is having on you. In most cases, you’ll see increased oil production, flaking, redness, and irritation. While the results can be much the same, the treatments will be different for each person.
People with oily skin need to stick to oil-free products, even if they’re experiencing some dryness. Instead of the liquidy lotions you normally buy, look for items that are still oil-free and non-comedogenic but are thicker, like a cream, and offer more moisturizing agents. Products that contain antioxidants and sunblock are also a good option since they stop further damage from the sun while replenishing the agents that fight environmental irritants. People with dry skin, on the other hand, will probably want to switch from their normal cream to one that contains some oils as these are the quickest way to lock in any moisture that you do have.
Anyone who is having skin problems should switch to a gentle cleanser. If your skin is already irritated, dousing it with the drying agents found in most soaps will only worsen the situation. So try a sensitive skin option instead. And stay away from long showers. While it probably definitely feels good to get out of the cold for awhile, excessive water on the skin will actually leech it of moisture. You may think that some of the suggestions listed here seem ludicrous, but the truth is, everyone’s skin can react in different ways to harsh winter weather. In order to preserve the luminescent skin that you enjoy throughout the year, you’re probably going to have to turn your beauty routine on its head.
