Aveeno Inspires Campaign
The Aveeno Brand continues to make strides towards sustainability with the announcement of exciting new eco-conscious efforts and an alliance that educates consumers on the importance of reducing waste and helping the environment, all building off a foundation set more than three years ago with the brand’s Aveeno Inspires campaign.
In an effort to educate consumers on how they can personally make sustainable strides in their local communities after they have purchased and used Aveeno Products, the brand kicks off a partnership this month with TerraCycle. The mission of the program is to give new life to empty Aveeno Product tubes by ‘upcycling’ the material into eco-friendly items, such as household items that will then be available for purchase at major retailers nationwide, offering consumers the opportunity to ‘reuse’ their favorite Aveeno Products. This unique partnership offers communities a chance to make sustainable strides; Aveeno Beauty Brigades are currently being formed across the country to collect empty Aveeno Product tubes (all of the elongated tubes from sun care, facial care, baby and body care products). For each tube received by TerraCycle, the Aveeno Brand will pay two cents to the non-profit organization or school of one’s choice or to the featured charity, The Skin Cancer Foundation. “We are incredibly proud of the progress the Aveeno Brand has made in terms of sustainability,” said Michael Marquis, Aveeno Brand Group Product Director. “We continue to look for ways to improve our eco-conscious practices, from how we source ingredients and packaging materials, to reducing waste and resources needed for product transport. It’s through our collaboration with partners like TerraCycle that makes it possible for us to expand our commitment to sustainability, giving back to the community and improving our environment.” The majority of Aveeno Products are recyclable, including all High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polyethylene Terepthalate (PET) bottles and paper packaging. The brand aims to continue to increase the amount of recyclable packaging in future product launches. The brand also recognizes that many recycling municipalities cannot accommodate a large range of packaging materials and through the Aveeno TerraCycle Beauty Brigades opportunity, aims to further help consumers reduce their carbon footprint.
The Aveeno Brand has a long standing commitment to protecting the environment and natural resources. At its core is the belief that nature has the power to make life beautiful, and the brand continues on its path to provide women with products that adhere to eco-friendly practices. The Aveeno Brand, a product of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company, a division of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc., follows its Credo mission statement developed over 60 years ago that serves as a framework for sustainability, and speaks to social, environmental and financial responsibility. Aveeno Skincare is the pioneer of ACTIVE NATURALS®, ingredients derived from nature and uniquely formulated to optimize skin’s health and beauty. Created by nature and powered by science, ACTIVE NATURALS® ingredients include Oat, Shiitake, Soy and Feverfew.
Made of 100 percent natural colloidal Oatmeal, the Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment recently became the first body care product to earn the new Green Good Housekeeping Seal (GGHS). Awarded to only seven products in its inaugural year, this distinction was granted based on product efficacy and extensive environmental criteria, including: the reduction of water use in manufacturing, energy efficiency in manufacturing and product use, ingredient and product safety, packaging reduction and the brand’s corporate social responsibility.
Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment is a bath additive that helps to relieve itchy, dry irritated skin. According to Good Housekeeping, “The product performed particularly well in the Research Institute’s evaluation in the areas of: toxicity and product safety; sourcing of product ingredients; sourcing of packaging materials; producing low levels of greenhouse gases; and reducing industrial and hazardous wastes from manufacturing.”
Building off a foundation set with Aveeno Inspires, the brand’s signature national beautification initiative that inspires the discovery of natural beauty in communities and parks across the United States where hundreds of gardens, parks and trails have been refurbished and rejuvenated with the help of members of communities, and in upholding the parent company’s guiding principles and philosophy, the Aveeno Brand’s sustainability vision has translated into all areas of its business; the brand continues to help reduce waste by:
- Incorporating advertisements on environmentally friendly Eco-hangers; distributed at dry cleaners nationwide, these hangers, made of 100 percent recycled paperboard and polypropylene, provide consumers with the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprints(1).
- Continuing to use and increase the amount of recycled materials to create product packaging; paper cartons for Aveeno POSITIVELY AGELESS(TM) products contain post-consumer recycled materials or are from FSC certified sources. The goal is to increase the use of post-consumer recycled materials in our bottles.
- Partnering with ENVIROSAX to create reusable bags, which were given away to 1,000 consumers on Earth Day. Made of organic cotton sourced from a farmers cooperate in Peru, the bags benefitted local communities in addition to helping reduce the number of plastic bags used. For each bag given away, the Aveeno Brand made a $10 donation to Global Green USA which supports the fight against global climate change, and the creation of green buildings and cities within the United States.
Launching later this year, the Aveeno Facebook page will provide consumers with the latest and greatest Aveeno Brand news, including the brand’s most recent sustainability efforts, such as the cornerstone Aveeno Inspires campaign WaterWorks program, the Aveeno Brand’s partnership with Organic Gardening magazine that helps install rainwater cisterns for community gardens to conserve water and revitalize local communities; ‘friends’ of the page will also have the opportunity to sign up for one of the Aveeno TerraCycle Beauty Brigades.
