Goddess Garden Skin Care
Goddess Garden was founded in 2004 by Nova Covington, a fourth generation Herbalist. As a new mother, Nova was inspired to make organic skincare products initially for her daughter Paige. As a baby, Paige was allergic to sulfates, the synthetic bubbles in traditional bubble bath and soap. When Paige was 1 year old, Nova created her first organic skincare product: a body wash made with all-natural organic castile soap.
As a mother who reads the labels of children’s body products, Nova was uncomfortable with many synthetic and chemical ingredients which are absorbed through the skin. Motivated to develop skincare solutions that her family could use safely, Nova developed additional products that were made from natural and organic ingredients. Within a year, she had created a sunscreen made with 70% organic ingredients using a pure mineral, zinc oxide, as the active agent for sun protection.
The Goddess Garden sunscreen became the launching pad for a differentiating product line: 70% Organic Lavender Sunscreen made with Fair Trade Shea Butter providing SPF 30 protection. These natural sunscreen products have the highest organic content of any sunscreen on the market. Working with plants and botanicals comes naturally to Nova. She grew up in the Canadian and Oregon wilderness where much of her childhood was
spent out-of-doors in nature. Herbalism was handed down from mother to daughter for four generations in her family. Her great grandmother, Marie Walters, learned the medicinal use of native plants from the American Indian women in the Sierra Mountains of California. The knowledge continued through to Nova’s mother who made herbal remedies, including golden seal antibiotic ointments and rosehip tea as Nova was growing up.
In addition to her family’s roots in Herbalism, Nova comes from a long line of well-educated women. Her great great grandmother, Frieda Ross, earned a degree in Business at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1807. Her great grandmother, Marie Walters, studied to be an interpreter of foreign law at UC-Berkeley. Her grandmother, Jane Fisher, served as the Mayor of Bishop, California for 12 years, as well as columnist for the local newspaper and the editor of a historical magazine. Nova’s mother, Nancy Covington, and her grandmother are both published authors of books and
magazines articles.
Nova credits the women in her family for her intellectual and research-oriented approach to business. She has a Master’s Degree in International & Intercultural Communication from the University of Denver and joined Hewlett- Packard in her early 20’s. At HP, her communication skills and leadership training allowed her to excel within the company. When she left the corporate world to start a family in 2002, she was supervising training programs for 500 employees and 75 managers.
Goddess Garden is a woman-owned business with Nova directing dayto- day operations as President of the company. She applies her aromatherapy training to create unique combinations she wishes to see in individual products. Daughter Paige, the impetus for the first Goddess Garden product, is now 5, and gives input to Nova. Paige chose the grape flavor lip balm sunscreen as a children’s favorite, with Nova creating a version for adults, a cocoa mint flavor. Lip sunscreen products contain zinc oxide for sun protection and are made with 70% organic ingredients.
Nova’s environmental stance reflects her personal calling to do work that is good for the Earth, both in her choice of product ingredients and the reduced carbon footprint of her company.
