Holiday Beauty Tips From International Make-Up Artist

December 16, 2008

Wondering how to look dazzling for holiday gatherings? International make-up artist, fashion guru, professional model, agent, author and Your Signature Style host William Squire provides tips to make you sparkle.

To kick off the holidays, Squire and friends made over women at a senior center near his home in Palm Springs, then presented them and the male residents with gifts and a holiday party. “Everyone wants to look their best, no matter what their age is,” says Squire. “To glow this holiday season, think glimmer, shimmer and shine!” he adds, along with these tips:

1. With colder weather upon many parts of the country, you may need a heavier cream or a moisture mask, such as Lancome’s Aqua Fusion Continuing Infusing Moisturizer.

2. For a flawless-looking complexion, apply foundation with a brush in small downward strokes, continuing down to the neck. I love MAC’s foundation brush #190 and Kevyn Aucoin’s Liquid Airbrush Creme Foundation.

3. For a spectacular glow, try Chanel’s Poudre Precieuse Gold Highlighting Powder with Brush, Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche D’or Golden Touch for the Face or your favorite gold dust.

4. Drama and dazzle starts with the eyes; silver, gold and metallic eye shadows are all the rage. Go light or heavy, no rules apply: just be sure to blend well. NARS single eye shadows in Silent Night or Bombshell are perfect for every festive occasion. Now’s the time to pull out your black eyeliner and go wild. Go heavier along the top of the lashes and toward the outer corner, and a bit softer under the eye for the perfect smoky eye. Follow with two coats of black mascara.

5. Always wanted to try false eyelashes but are intimidated? Buy some individual lashes and clear eyelash glue (don’t get white). Use tweezers to dip the ends in a small amount of glue and place on outer corners of lashes and hold for a moment. Three or four lashes make a huge impact.

6. This time of year is perfect for red lipstick and nail polish. Just make sure that the red on your nails is in the same color family as the red on your lips. Great alternatives to red polish are white, beige, gold or soft-pink pearlized colors, such as Chanel’s Le Vernis in Perle Rose. For great reds, OPI’s Red Hot Gift and Little Red Wagon are among my favorite polishes.

7. Unsure of which season to wear — fabrics like silk, taffeta, organza, crepe de chine, tulle, satin or velvet? The time is now. Put the jeans aside and dress up. Pull out that stunning black velvet jacket, cocktail dress or dressy slacks instead. Black and dark hues are worn in abundance: mix it with head-to-toe winter white, or mix in taupes, grays and browns. Wear jewelry that sparkles and shines — cocktail rings, costume jewelry, big earrings and pins.

8. For a final touch dab pure perfume, like Nuit de Noel by Caron, on your pulse points. Perfume is actually lighter than eau d’ toilette, which contains alcohol that gives it a stronger smell.

“Now all that’s left to do is exude confidence, have fun and know that no one else in the world has the same beauty as you.”

To help women find their individual style, Squire and model/author Laura Boulay co-created Your Signature Style, which Squire now presents with former supermodel, actress and beauty expert Lisa Dean. In this ninety-minute transformational program, Dean and Squire get participants on their feet so they can practice how to walk like a model, enter a room with confidence, and stand for the perfect picture. Clients include Mercedes-Benz PGA Championships, Meeting Planners International, Deloitte & Touche, Saks Fifth Avenue and the Ritz-Carlton hotels. Squire and Boulay also collaborated on the “The Model’s Workbook,” to provide information and tips for people who want to succeed in the modeling industry.
