Thinning Eyebrow Tips from Celebrity Hairstylist & Beauty Expert Billy Lowe
Many of my clients often have questions about sparse or thinning eyebrows. Brows are such an important part of our features; they express, they frame, and many professionals in the beauty industry have perfected the craft of brow shaping and encourage it for most of their clients. There are many factors that can contribute to thinning brows whether it be genetics, medications, stress levels, skin conditions or plucking. It can be a very sensitive topic, but there are solutions.
From the least invasive to the most, here are a number of options for people who are concerned about sparse or thinning brows. These tips can be followed for any season, by anyone (male or female) and help provide great alternatives to sparse or thin looking eyebrows.
1 - VASELINE. Yes, it sounds funny, but it’s the oldest “Hollywood secret.” Lightly dab vaseline to the brow area at night just after cleansing the skin. Many of my clients swear that this age-old trick indeed helped regrow their brows. I have seen it for myself. I have clients who over-plucked for years and years, and their brows wouldn’t grow back. I recommended this beauty tip to them and voila. A few months later there indeed was growth.
2 - Use a brow pencil. I recommend Clinique Cosmetics for the natural look their brand provides. This temporary enhancement can be done yourself by penciling in the shape of your brow. Using light “feather strokes”, lightly color in the desired area in creating or enhancing your brows. You can practice feather strokes with a normal pencil and piece of paper to perfect your technique as well.
3 - Eyebrow Extensions. Many eyelash extension specialists apply eyelash extensions to the brow area to fill in. Keep in mind that with these light fibres, there needs to be a connection point and they are primarily used to thicken or enhance the brow area. If there is no hair, there is nothing for the lash to adhere to. We simply extend or enhance what’s there, by connecting these fine fibres to already existing brow hairs to fill in the gaps.
4 - Tattooing or permanent make-up. Do your homework here. However there are many talented permanent make-up artists that do beautiful brow or other liner work. Touch-ups will be needed every 2-3 years, however. Oilier skin types may find more frequent touch-ups are needed as the dyes fade faster in oilier skin types.
5 - Permanent hair replacement. Hair folicles are taken from the scalp and applied to the brow area to replicate a natural human brow. Hair around the occipital bone is the finest so transplants are usually taken from there first. The biggest issue with this is that hair in the back of the head is programmed to continue growing so frequent brow grooming will be necessary to prevent excessively long brows. .
These are just a few options and solutions for people who are concerned with sparse or thinning brows.
