Skin Care and Beauti-ceuticals Nutrition Meet

When it comes to what makes your skin glow and look its healthiest, the new thinking is your nutritionist knows best. In addition to keeping your diet in check, your energy high and your body feeling great, nutritionists have always had the expertise and strategies to bring skin to its optimum level of beauty.

According to Keri Glassman, MS, RD, CDN, nutritionist and the developer of the nutrition and whole foods directed skin care line Skin AppĂ©tit, the old adage ‘you are what you eat’ rings true. Nutritionists know, she explains, that staying hydrated and eating right are just as important for skin health as they are for heart health or weight control. “Wrinkled, dull and dry skin conditions can be linked in part to the foods you put in your body,” explains Glassman.

“Consuming a balanced diet that packs in lots of vitamins, minerals, fiber, essential fatty acids and protein is what produces shiny, glowing, hydrated and smooth skin. In creating Skin AppĂ©tit, we formulated a product line that can deliver the right mixture of whole foods & nutrients directly to your skin” says Glassman.

Debra Holstein, a branding and trends consultant for the cosmetics industry, sees the new trend of nutritionist as beauty expert as a natural progression from the popularity of whole, organic ingredients and movement towards ‘ageless eating’, eating foods known to be good for skin. “Consumers are more savvy and knowledgeable about their beauty and health choices these days,” says Holstein. “Just putting a natural ingredient on the label is not enough, people want to know more about the ingredient and the role it plays in a product’s efficacy
and more and more we realize that eating foods rich in skin savers like antioxidants, vitamins and omegas is key to feeling and looking your best. The beauty is in the synergy of what you put in and on your body. By eating right and using whole food extracts topically, your skin receives an extra boost of beauty-boosting nutrients.”

Glassman, whose NYC practice caters to an a-list clientele, says that her new role as a skin care line developer evolved organically from her nutritionist practice. “I have always focused on how my patients’ entire lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress, sleep, fluids) affects their whole being and appearance,” explains Glassman. “I can’t tell you how many times a client has walked into my office exclaiming they were thrilled as they have not only lost weight and increased their energy level, but their skin looks so amazing everyone is commenting on it.”

Fortunately, it’s not necessary to retain the services of a nutritionist to enjoy the benefits of better skin. Valuable information on best foods for ageless eating, anti-inflammatory foods and other skin improving diet tips are readily available on the internet and in popular books. And, skin care companies have stepped up their offerings with products that meld the efficacy of technological advances with the specific powers of natural, real ingredients. “Recognizing that skin is the largest organ of our body, and what we put on the skin influences it, whole, organic ingredients are being incorporated into the best new skin care products,” says Holstein.
