7 Million Awarded in Accutane Lawsuit
7 million dollars was awarded to the Florida man the sued Hoffman-La Roche the makers of accutane. Adam Mason had most of his colon removed after suffering from a disease apparently caused by Accutane.
“Roche is disappointed in the jury’s decision in the matter of Adam Mason’s allegation that Accutane was responsible for his inflammatory bowel disease,” the company said Friday. “The Accutane labeling has contained a warning about IBD for more than 20 years. Nevertheless, there is no reliable scientific evidence that Accutane actually causes IBD.”
Mason began taking the drug in 1991 and soon developed symptoms, said his attorney, Michael Hook. Mason has had three-quarters of his colon removed and soon will undergo surgery to remove the entire organ, Hook said.
In May, a jury in New Jersey awarded a man $2.6 million (€1.8 million) in a similar case. Roche also plans to appeal that verdict.
Hook said he has about 500 other similar lawsuits pending against the company.
Accutane’s links to suicidal behavior and birth defects are much better known than its reported links to inflammatory bowel disease. The detailed instructions in the package include a lengthy, bold-faced warning about psychiatric disorders and begin with the words “Causes birth defects” and “Do not get pregnant” with an illustration of a pregnant woman and a circle with a slash through it.
A brief, plain-type warning states Accutane has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
